Oil Fired Central Heating

Heating Oil

Oil works extremely well and efficiently for central heating and domestic water heating. It is stored in a tank above ground and is delivered to a building via a pipe running from the tank.

Installation Costs

The average installation cost of an oil-fired central heating system is around £6,000.00, making it around £2,000.00 more than an LPG installation would cost.

The appreciably higher install costs are mainly because oil boilers are generally more expensive to purchase than LPG boilers and additionally an oil tank must be bought by the home owner.

Since new laws were introduced in 2005, certain oil tanks have to be bunded (placed inside a leak-proof enclosure), increasing installation costs.

Running Costs

In the past, the running cost of oil-fired systems were cheaper than LPG, however the the latest increases mean that this is no longer true.

Running costs should be around the £1,000.00 per year mark..

Over recent years, oil prices have been somewhat unstable with several increases and decreases one after another. This means it may be difficult to maintain control of energy bills.

Carbon Emissions

Heating Oil emits about 24% more CO² than LPG but 40% less than electricity.

Heating Oil and other fuels are just about the most frequently reported kind of water pollutant investigated by the Environment Agency in England and Wales and account for over a quarter of all severe pollution incidents.

Features and Benefits

By using oil, a person has the independence to change their supplier at any time. They are able to choose who their fuel is supplied by,  which means they are able to shop around and take advantage of any energy price reductions that individual suppliers might offer.

As with LPG, there are a wide range of appliances available from leading manufacturers.

Potential Drawbacks

As owners of oil-fired heating systems own their storage tanks they will be responsible for its installation, safe guarding, yearly servicing and insurance.

The owner of an oil tank is liable for leakage however caused, whether as a result of poor installation, lack of maintenance and/or vandalism.

Some of the UK’s leading insurers don't offer cover regarding oil storage tanks.

Very stringent regulations are in place pertaining to the storage of heating oil, and when these are breached the consequences can be severe. Failure to comply with environmental regulations is a criminal and not just a civil offence.

Whenever an oil spillage occurs, the council may declare the terrain polluted under the Environmental Protection Act.

The way oil spreads means that even a small quantity could cause significant harm.

Oil tanks can be siphoned off by thieves, also potentially posing a security problem.

Oil fired heating installers do not have to be OFTEC registered and there's no regulating body like CORGI to protect home owners and consumers.

Purchase of another fuel such as electricity or gas will normally be requird for  cooking. However, there are oil-fired ranges available on the market.

Considerations to apply when having a new oil boiler installed:

  • How many radiators you have
  • Whether you have double glazing
  • What kind of demands will be placed on the hot water system
  • The age of your home
  • Your home's insulation
  • Whether you have high ceilings
  • How many bathrooms
